CHAPTER TWENTY

Moe and Stacie sat in Moe’s car watching Christoph, the valet in front of the Waterford Hotel, for a few hours. He’d spent most of his time waiting at the stand in front of the hotel’s entrance, playing on his phone.

The Waterford Hotel sat on the water in Baltimore’s historic Fells Point. On the corner of a string of row homes, it stood five stories tall. When it had been built in the late 1800s, it was likely the tallest building for miles. Now, there were buildings four and five times its size a few blocks away. The hotel’s original intent was to serve sailors coming into port for a night off the boat. As the neighborhood around it had gentrified, it too had lost its bar in favor of a restaurant, beautified its rooms, and become a getaway for tourists looking to avoid the franchise hotel chains that filled every city’s downtown.

“This is a waste of time,” Stacie said with a sigh.

Moe sighed and nodded. “Christoph isn’t exactly hopping with customers, is he?” Moe asked.

“He is not,” Stacie replied.

Moe scanned the street for the hundredth time. Couples walked in and out of the boutique shops, carrying small bags, the random jogger passed by, city dwellers walked their dogs with small plastic bags in their hands – there was nothing out of place. “We’re going to need to get to his boss. He’s just a random corner boy in a strategic location. He’s not putting a hit on anyone,” Moe mused.

“Let’s try something else,” Stacie said, as she pushed the car door open and hopped out into the street.

Moe followed behind her.

Stacie caught Christoph’s attention halfway across the street. Tucking his phone under the valet stand, he stood up straight and flattened out the red vest he wore. From her sashay, Moe could tell she was turning on all her charms. Christoph wasn’t unattractive, but with his scrawny build and mild acne, he wasn’t the type of guy to draw a woman of Stacie’s caliber. Having someone as beautiful as Stacie Howe pay him any attention must have made his heart want to explode from his chest.

Stacie walked around the stand so she stood next to him and leaned in, letting her breasts come close to his arm. “You’re Christoph, right?” she asked.

Christoph took a step back and swallowed. “So, um, what if I am. Who’s asking?” he said, his brow filling with sweat, while he crossed his arms across his chest, trying to make himself look tough.

Moe watched in awe as Stacie ran a finger down his chest with one hand and reached under the valet stand with the other to grab his phone. “My friend and I are looking to score and we’d do anything to get our hands on what you’ve got,” Stacie said, as she held the phone behind her back where Christoph couldn’t see it.

Catching on, Moe hurried forward. As she pressed up against Stacie and shot a grin at Christoph, she took the phone.
